Berlin’s Oskar Brandt writes orchestral pop for 2 a.m. crises, setting private thoughts against piano, strings and full-scale cinematic drama. “Orchestral pop” fits what he’s doing in his debut single, “Now or Never”. You can tell he’s spent as much time with film scores and musicals as with pop records — the production has that widescreen feel, piano and strings doing real work in the sound. The song finds its strongest moment around the 2-minute mark, when the strings pull back and his voice takes over.

Everything before it builds towards that release. The subject is a relationship right on the edge, two people held back by their own battles, still circling each other, still hoping there’s a way through. Not a new story. People have been writing this exact scene for decades. What makes Brandt’s version work is the restraint “Now or Never” sits in the not-knowing, in that space between giving up and trying again, and that’s harder to pull off convincingly than a tidy happy ending. This song wants patience, a few plays before it opens up. For a debut, that’s a fairly confident thing to ask of a listener, and “Now or Never” earns it.
