Collector’s Edition are Vinzent and D. Allen, a duo from Augusta, Georgia. On ‘If You Only Knew’, falling in love brings an awkward obligation: telling a partner about the past and accepting that she gets to decide what happens next. The writing has a sly streak. Vinzent moves through attraction, intimacy, and the excitement of finding someone special, then his conscience interrupts the romance. Those interruptions give the song its bite. He’s enjoying the relationship while quietly calculating how much the truth could cost him.

Love, Guilt, Honesty

Rap and sung vocals suit that conflict, giving the storytelling and the repeated plea distinct voices. The chorus keeps returning to whether she would stay, gradually exposing how much reassurance the narrator wants. My favorite aspect is his self-interest. Affection and guilt occupy the same lines, and his desire to come clean competes with his desire to keep everything comfortable. Collector’s Edition make that messy position the subject of the song. The romance has consequences, and the narrator knows he has some explaining to do.
