FORRM is directed by Firouz FarmanFarmaian, an Iranian-French artist, filmmaker and musician whose work spans music, cinema and contemporary art. The project has developed in France, in New York, in Venice and in Morocco, and previous releases have included ‘FORRM NU FORRM’, ‘GALACTICA’ and ‘JUNKIE WAYZ’; there is also ‘NOMADS PRAYER’, the soundtrack to the acclaimed documentary ‘PATH’. The fact that there is a link with film is relevant here: ‘PALAZZO’, which was recorded at Bloom Studios, presents FORRM’s experimental rock in a more direct form while still maintaining its cinematic aspirations.
The live instrumentation, the use of electronics and the natural atmosphere form the basis of the project, a combination which shows real potential given the background. The live performances involve physical movement while the electronics provide another means of shaping the environment surrounding them. What is of interest is the way these elements are combined on a recording, particularly since improvisation is already part of the artist’s usual approach. FORRM assigns a definite position to that kind of relationship within the realms of alternative rock and art rock.
Experimental, Cinematic, Atmospheric

Venice provides part of the visual background for the release. In view of FarmanFarmaian’s approach to filmmaking and art, there is a real connection between the two. He has various methods of developing an idea, and ‘PALAZZO’ is part of a broader body of work in which a recording can be accompanied by a film or an exhibition. To me this is a helpful way of approaching the project since it gives the cinematic description a solid foundation in what the artist actually does.
The release strategy also merits consideration. FORRM is distributing ‘PALAZZO’ through independent radio, the specialist press and direct cultural networks, with international radio support already being carried out. This is a purposeful decision regarding where this music might reach listeners who will appreciate it. A broadcaster capable of accommodating adventurous rock or a journalist willing to take the time to get to know the wider project is appropriate for music based on atmosphere and artistic identity.
‘PALAZZO’ offers a highly convincing way of accessing FORRM: it is an immediate experimental rock record by an artist who already has a diverse multidisciplinary practice. The most significant aspect of this work is the combination of live performance, electronic production and the filmmaker’s concern with setting; these are important elements, and FarmanFarmaian has provided them with a clear and coherent framework.
