Naomi Jane is a Manhattan-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist now based in Santa Barbara. Co-written with Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket, “Passenger Princess” opens her album “Kinda Sorta Country” with a relationship argument that gives its breezy country-pop setting some bite. Sharing somebody’s life has started to mean accepting their decisions, and she wants a turn at choosing the direction.

Pedal steel adds a country inflection, while Jane’s deep vocal gives the frustration weight. The hook, “Move over and let me drive,” makes the point with satisfying economy. Her conversational wit keeps that tension approachable. As an album opener, it establishes a narrator worth following—someone ready to question the arrangement, claim some authority and enjoy delivering the punchline along the way, with attitude intact throughout.
